Veterinary Science for Animal Welfare and Well-being
As per the definition, Veterinary Science is a comprehensive science that deals in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of various diseases in wildlife, domesticated, exotic, and animals. There is more to a profession of veterinary as it also involves taking care of the livestock and fostering them.
To be a certified professional in veterinary science and animal husbandry, aspirants need to be a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, a graduate course of four years’ duration. This course follows a year long practical internship and Master of Veterinary Science in a specialized branch of study.
In a global context, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and European Board of Veterinary Specialties have recognized twenty and twenty three veterinary specialties, respectively, including neurology, behavior, emergency and critical care, anesthesiology, surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, oncology, cardiology, and ophthalmology. Other specialties are birds, dentistry, feline, microbiology, nutrition, parasitological, and poultry.
In an Indian context, the prominent specialties include dairy science and technology, dairy chemistry, dairy engineering, animal economics, animal biotechnology, piggery, and poultry science and technology among others. Veterinarians can practice on their own in a private setting with their being utilized mostly by the urban people who keep pets at homes for their companionship or amusement. Government also hires the services of these public health professionals in zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and national parks. The employment of animals such as horses, dogs, and camels in the defense services also require veterinarians besides various research and development departments.
Each profession requires a different set of personality traits in their respective professional individuals. Besides being perceptive, patient, and extra sensitive toward their subject of study, professionals in veterinary science should have genuine love and warmth for animals.
